Bells Extra Special Corporate Trophy Challenge 2011

The first leg of the Bells Extra Special Corporate Trophy Challenge was held on the weekend of the 9-12th June 2011. As one of the premiere fly fishing events of the year in South Africa and now in its 10th Year all eyes were on the event to see which teams would make it through to the all important Final Leg at the end of July!!

Team Safari & Film Africa, represented by John Bromilow, Grevin Price, Jared Kloke and Guy Price took first prize and have now a place in the Finals. Well done guys and good luck for the 28-31st July!

IGFA (International Game Fish Association)

In our ongoing drive to promote the wonderful species on the African Continent and especially here in South Africa we have made contact with IGFA (International Game Fish Association) regarding the status of Smallmouth and Largemouth Yellowfish in the Record Book. As yet they both are not eligible for line class, fly rod or junior records and the Smallmouth is not even in an all-tackle catergory. We believe that by promoting these species with IGFA we shall receive more international interest and thus put a value greater than already is on the species.

We have just recently had a promising response from Jack Vitek who is the World Records Coordinator for IGFA:

"Mr. Egner,

Thank you very much for your email and your interest in the IGFA. Regarding your question on adding these two species as world record fish; we currently have the largemouth yellowfish as an All-Tackle record, however we have not had a smallmouth yellowfish submitted and/or approved. The smallmouth is eligible for an All-Tackle record, as long as the fish weighs in the upper 50% of the species’ maximum weight, and the fish weighs over one (1) pound.

Currently, neither of these species are eligible for line class, fly rod, or junior records. I realize this is why you sent your email, and once again, I appreciate your interest in adding these species. We keep a running list of species that anglers have requested for line class and fly rod categories, and I will add these two species to that list. Once the species is added to the list, it will be discussed by members of IGFA staff and Board Members to see if it should be available for line class and fly rod categories.

This is not a very rapid process, so I do not want to mislead you into thinking that it will happen overnight. However, I can guarantee that these two species, along with your email, will be added to this file and discussed at our next meeting for this subject.

Hi All
Here is a short Teaser for the upcoming release of "THE KINGDOM - hunting trout on the roof of Africa". This project was inspired 2 years ago when I travelled with friends to Lesotho and saw what is still the biggest river trout I have ever seen below the Katse Dam wall and vowed to return if not to the same river. Finally this year after 3 hard weeks hiking, eating 2 min noodles and Tuna we are able to say the 3 legs were each a success.
With the help of Edward Truter and our sponsors including Rio Fly lines, Oakley, Laxtons, Flyfishers unlimited, Senqu, Shilton, TFO and the good guys at Tourette Fishing I think we will have a really special product you will be able to view soon in the comfort of your homes.

Mortimer 2009

Cliff and Eddie Mortimer have once again used Safari and Film Africa to document and capture one of their awesome fishing adventures! This Time they travelled to Rio Azul in Mozambique with Garreth Coombes of AFRI-G safaris. The weather could not have been any better and the accommodations and guides were superb. Some good underwater shots were complimented with stunning sunsets and exciting fishing! Personal bests were the order of the day and a highlight was a huge GT taken off the surface amongst a shoal of Fusiliers.

Brad Anderson of UNIVERSAL PLYWOODS also got in on the action with some nice bottoms and Yellowspot Kingfish. Here Guide Simon Strydom shows off a beautiful Queenfish with the setting sun in the background.

Great Fishing, Great Filming!

It started off slowly at Sterkfontein this December. The heavens opened and the streams and inlets turned a colour they rarely do. Some overcast weather and rain spelt a bad start to the sight fishing we so dearly enjoy. 4 days in the gods of fishing finally received our pleas and the fishing started to heat up with the weather. On the filming side, which of course relies heavily on the quality of fishing, the goal of getting as many takes on the dry was achieved and a little taste of this will soon be posted on the blog. Least we forget-thank you to Kerry Wallace for her excellent work in operating the camera and her patients in dealing with fish mad anglers and short tippets, I mean fuses!!

New kid on the block Rob Scott from Tourette Fishing showed us it only requires 24 hours to get fish in the 6lb class when he landed this beauty in his first morning/second day at Sterkies.

The Hopper proved to be a winner again and a good few quality fish were deceived by this special pattern. It made for exciting sight fishing casting to scum line feeding fish and when presented well could not be beat by any other pattern in the box!

Due to the great success we had in getting small mouth to the dry and capturing it on video we are going to return to the big blue in February again for round two of filming-the release for end of fall 2009 is still on!

Sightfishing utopia is back!
Safari and film will be releasing a film on sterkfontein in the fall of 09 and will be completeing the final touches to it this december, january and feb.
It will feature some great sightfishing takes and awesome scenery along with some inside info on how to take on the might of sterkfontein dam in the free state! With over 100km of shoreline this may prove usefull!!
